Licensed

First be sure your Electrician, Electrical Contractor, Electrical Company is licensed.

It is possible to search by Name, License Number, City or County, or License Type.

And, you can see any complaints on the license and how long the person has been licensed. I believe that any company that has been in business 20 years or more has more credibility than a company that has not been in business that long.

Permits

So you have determined you are dealing with a licensed electrician, electrical contractor, electrical company.

And let us say you have determined you need a permit for your project.

Don’t let the electrical contractor talk you into pulling a home owner’s permit.

Be wary of any contractor trying to get you to pull the permit.

Better Business Bureau

Looking at electrician on the BBB gives you information such as: How long it has been in business, and whether the electrical contractor is BBB accredited, also what the electrical contractor’s rating is.

You can search by company name.

And then you can click on the Reviews & Complaints page which may give insight as to what other people have thought of working with that electrician.

Communication

With all the different ways to try to determine if you are dealing with a good electrical company, perhaps the best way is just talking with them.

Can you communicate well with the electrical contractor or office manager?

Do you get the feeling they have your best interest at heart? You can sometimes get a pretty good sense of an electrical company just by talking with them on the phone.

We've used Montgomery Electric for years! They are very professional and honest. Recently we had some surge problems and found that our surge protector had blown up. We called Montgomery Electric and Chris (in the office) suggested some troubleshooting steps to take. We called her back to report the results and she immediately diagnosed the problem as being a Duke Energy "dropped neutral" issue. We contacted Duke Energy, they dispatched a truck and he confirmed the issue and repaired. Thank you Chris at Montgomery Electric for always being helpful.
