What to Look for in an Electrician, Electrical
Contractor or Electrical Company

Licensed

First be sure your Electrician, Electrical Contractor, Electrical Company is licensed.

You can search by Name, License Number,City or County, or License Type.

You can see any complaints on the license and how long the person has been licensed. I believe that any company that has been in business 10 years or more has more credibility than a company that has not been in business that long.

Permits

So you have determined you are dealing with a licensed electrician, electrical contractor, electrical company.

And let us say you have determined you need a permit for your project.

Don’t let the electrical contractor talk you into pulling a home owner’s permit.

Be wary of any contractor trying to get you to pull the permit.

Better Business Bureau

Looking at electrician on the BBB gives you information such as: How long it has been in business, whether the electrical contractor is BBB accredited, what the electrical contractor’s rating is.

You can search by company name.

Clicking on the Reviews & Complaints page may give insight as to what other people have thought of working with that electrician.

Communication

With all the different ways to try to determine if you are dealing with a good electrical company, perhaps the best way is just talking with them.

Can you communicate well with the electrical contractor or office manager?

Do you get the feeling they have your best interest at heart? You can sometimes get a pretty good sense of an electrical company just by talking with them on the phone.
